Vote could scrap rail service plan near Charlotte

STATESVILLE, NC (AP) -- Iredell County's Commission could derail a plan to bring commuter and freight service along 25 miles of railroad between Mount Mourne and Charlotte.

The commissioners are scheduled to vote Tuesday on the Red Line Regional Rail project. Chairman Steven Johnson is a vocal opponent, saying it doesn't make financial sense.

All seven local governments along the proposed line must give their approval in order for it to proceed.

Supporters say the $452 million project would create thousands of jobs and ease traffic congestion on Interstate 77.

The Red Line Task Force has asked local governments to review the project and hold public hearings before making decisions, but Johnson says commissioners are ready to vote now.
