NEW BERN, NC (WCTI) -- A man accused in a New Bern cold case murder and rape has a criminal history that spans decades, and includes four charges of first degree rape in New Bern.

Police in Wilmington arrested Andrew Bernard Adams over the weekend, accusing him of killing a woman who was found buried in Adams' yard.

New Bern Police on Saturday charged Adams with a murder and rape case that originated in 1977.

Gwendolyn Antoinette Nelson was killed near a New Bern school in late June of that year, police said.

Adams is accused of Nelson's rape and murder.

NewsChannel 12 talked to Nelson's daughter, who is now 38-years-old.
