CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Whether you like it smoky, sweet, saucy or savory, there's no denying barbecue is a southern favorite.

The best barbecuers around fired up their grills and smokers and busted out secret recipes to compete in the inaugural Step Up for Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off Saturday.

Twenty-five teams stepped up to the plate to help raise money for the organization that exists to help wounded and disabled veterans. Grill master Ken Badoian says he's happy to compete but is even more excited about the mission behind the meat.

"I think it's really important to support the guys serving now,” competitor Ken Badoian said. “We came home from Vietnam, and we weren't as welcomed. These guys now really deserve the credit."

Badoian was part of the Saint Paul's United Methodist Church team.

Tune in to WWAY NewsChannel 3 Sunday night at 11 to find out which team cooked up the victory.

This BBQ was a great event!

Lot's of people, some with their animals and lots of good food to sample and with live music. A beautiful day to meet with friends and "step up for soldiers". I think this inaugural event even rivaled the seafood chowder festival!
