WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Every day, firefighters put themselves in harm's way to make sure we are safe, and sometimes, that means risking and losing their own lives.
Firefighters from the Asheville and Salisbury Fire Departments hosted a safety initiative seminar Saturday to talk to young and experienced firefighters about being better prepared for dangerous situations. Both departments recently lost brothers in the line of duty.
"It's something we always think about, but it's not something we hold onto a lot,” Wilmington Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Tom Robinson said. “Sometimes, we actually tend to think that it can't happen to us. That's one of the reasons we are having this seminar because it can happen anywhere."
"We're a group of men and women that feel it's our calling,” said Lt. Paul Schoenwalder with New Hanover County Fire Rescue. “It's what we were chosen to do, and this is what we do, and we enjoy doing it."
Schoenwalder said the seminar was very emotional and full of good advice.
