BREVARD, NC (AP) -- Transylvania County commissioners have approved money to remove debris clogging the French Broad River.
The Asheville Citizens Times reported commissioners agreed to provide $12,000 for the project.
The work is expected to be completed in May.
Bob Twomey with the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service says the channel cut by the river around the debris near the county airport is more than twice its normal width of 100 feet.
The logjam formed more than a year ago when large hardwood trees fell across the river near Penrose.
It's more than 100 feet thick and about 25 feet high. Twomey says it's one the largest jams he's ever seen.
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources agreed in December to provide $25,000 for the removal effort.
