CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Hundreds of people plunged into the chilly waters of Carolina Beach Saturday to raise money for Special Olympics of New Hanover County.
The eighth annual Polar Plunge drew a bigger-than-ever crowd. Folks dressed in costumes and bathing suits, but the only thing off limits was a wetsuit. The water temperature was a cool 53 degrees, but that's about ten degrees warmer than it was last year. Those who took the plunge say the cold is worth the cause.
"Oh, it's fantastic! It's exhilarating,” exclaimed Polar Plunger Joanne Kevitz. “I thought it was going to be a lot colder, but when you got in and got psyched, it was just fantastic."
This year was Kevitz's first time taking the plunge. She said she will certainly be back next year, and in costume.
