RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The war in Afghanistan has made for strange political bedfellows in North Carolina's congressional delegation, with a conservative Republican joining two liberal Democrats in calling for the withdrawal of US troops.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Republican Rep. Walter Jones joined Democrats Brad Miller and David Price at a meeting at the capitol Monday where the three urged the Obama administration to leave Afghanistan.
About 150 people at the Legislative Building gave Jones a standing ovation after an emotional speech recounting his visit to three disabled Marines at Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Jones, Miller and Price say they often disagree on policy issues, but say the war transcends partisan divisions. Jones's participation was criticized by his Republican primary opponent, Frank Palombo.
