WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has gone to the dogs. Kind of.

The Sheriff's Office takes over Animal Control Services tomorrow.

The current animal control officers were sworn in as part of the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office says because deputies have more authority, the change will mean even better services.

"The Animal Services Unit is in an enforcement situation with the animals, so falling underneath the Sheriff's Office, with our chain of command and our protocol for doing things, I believe that will be a better fit," Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer said.

The Sheriff's Office says the decision was not made because of problems within animal control, but simply to help make the organization more effective.

no wonder

Great, now that they control animal services, they can screw your pet over, and leave you with no real way to fight against them when they are completely wrong. My animal is facing death because it bit someone who trespassed on our property and since its the police what can I really do? People are stupid enough to believe cops are always right despite the thousands of times they are proven wrong, or found breaking the law themselves.

ACS was and has been a

ACS was and has been a Million Dollar self supporting Division for years. Now with the NHCSD and enforcing new Fines, Citations and $138 cort cost per issuer even if dismissed. Who is your buddy now and who is looking out for your interest?

The Sheriff took over five months ago.

Soon all these Ladies will be replaced by Deputies because they can meet the Standards.

Good Luck

It seems our sheriff's department has been running smoothly with no bad PR and no lawsuits filed. I wish them good luck in this endeavor and I hope all runs smoothly here, too.

I wonder

Does that also now mean all the animal control employees now work at the pleasure of the Sheriff like regular deputies currently do?

They sure do. I bet they

They sure do. I bet they will be droppong out like flies when they don't meet the standards...
