Special needs student dies after arriving at school on bus

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A student from Rachel Freeman School of Engineering died this morning after arriving at school.

Wilmington Police Department spokesman Det. Kevin Smith said the eight-year-old girl was unresponsive when a school bus for special needs students arrived at the school after 8 a.m. Smith said the child was in a wheelchair. He said the school nurse performed CPR on the girl until EMTs arrived, took over and took her to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she died.

School district spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum says counselors are at the school to help the students and staff. She says no other information is available at this time.

Investigators have not released the name of the child as they notify and continue to investigate.

Freeman is a magnet schools with students in grades kindergarten through fifth.
