Suspect, victim in fatal shooting had long feud

LUMBERTON, NC (AP) -- Robeson County authorities say the victim in a shooting outside a convenience store was once charged with killing the suspect's father.

The Robesonian of Lumberton reported that 33-year-old James Earvent Chavis was charged Tuesday in the shooting death of 30-year-old Fernando Fortunato Smith. Chavis remained in jail Thursday with no bond.

Authorities say the victim and suspect had a long running feud. Smith was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Chavis's father, James Arthur Deal, but court records indicate the charges were dropped in January 2005.

Newspaper articles quote officials at the time as saying that Smith intended to shoot Chavis, but shot Deal instead in an incident sparked by a fight the night before.

It wasn't immediately clear if Chavis has an attorney.
