WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Some UNC Wilmington students put the idea of turning trash into treasure into practice today.
Students worked together to build palm trees out of recyclable materials found around campus. The campus dining collected boxes, can lids and two-liter soda bottles to construct the trees.
Students heading to lunch were encouraged to help with the project and learn about sustainability in the process.
"They're here to do the event to help promote awareness for Recyclemania, which takes place now until the end of the month, and what Recyclemania is, it's an international competition between about 500 schools to basically see how much we can recycle during this time," UNCW Residence Coordinator Justin Wojicki said.
Progress is ranked in different categories, including paper, cardboard and waste minimization. UNCW finished second in the CAA last year.
