ONLY ON 3: Maritime Museum's periscope provides whole new view

READ MORE:

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Visitors to the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport can now see things in a whole new way. The museum installed a periscope through its roof this morning.

Rep. Mike McIntyre helped the museum get the periscope, which used to be part of a deep research nuclear submarine. It's about 34 feet long and weighs more than 1,700 pounds, which makes it the only one of its kind in the whole state.

The museum hopes the periscope will draw more visitors.

"Kids will be able to look through it, adults will be able to look through it, and we've positioned it so short and tall people can look out," said Jim Carey, of Friends of the Maritime Museum.

The periscope peeks through the museum's roof and moves 360 degrees freely. It makes it possible for visitors to see as far as Bald Head Island and Oak Island.
