Third-party group delivers ballot petition in NC

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A national group with a novel approach to nominating political candidates is poised to get access to the North Carolina ballot.

Members of Americans Elect delivered more than 86,000 petition signatures to the state Board of Elections in Raleigh Wednesday.

Once the state double-checks the certifications by county elections officials, the group's nominee will be listed on this November's ballot along with Democratic, Republican and Libertarian candidates.

Americans Elect will choose a presidential candidate in an online primary this June.

Luke Shuffield, the group's organizer at Duke University, says the effort is primarily intended to break what he calls political gridlock. The group says it has won ballot access in 21 states, and plans to have its candidate eligible to receive votes in all 50.
