CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Police in Carolina Beach are looking for a driver who ran over a camper early Sunday morning at Freeman Park.

"He was asleep in his tent about 2:30 in the morning and awakened by someone driving over him in his tent," Carolina Beach Police Det. Harry Humphries said.

Carolina Beach Police say Dale Joseph Sheeler is in the hospital after the accident at Freeman Park. Det. Humphries says Sheeler was sleeping near Zone 6 close to where cars drive on the beach .

"We don't know whether they were drinking," Humphries said. "We know nothing about the driver or the vehicle."

Because so many vehicles drive on the beach, police say they couldn't distinguish which tracks ran over Sheeler and have no idea what type of car it was.

"I mean, it's like New York City out there," Det. Humphries said. "There's people up all night long, and there's traffic in and out all the time, so I'm hoping that somebody was awake and did see something."

Humphries says Sheeler has broken ribs, but no internal injuries. Humphries says it could have turned out much worse.

"I'd say he's very lucky, extremely lucky," Humphries said. "Six inches one way or the other could have made a difference."

A spokeswoman for New Hanover Regional Medical Center says Sheeler is listed in fair condition.

If you have any information on what happened Sunday morning, call Carolina Beach Police.

I wasn't out there then but

I wasn't out there then but when I am out there I do notice the morons that camp with no vehicles in the middle. This should be common sense to not camp with a dark tent(usually), no fire and no vehicle...for safety reasons! And the Northend is a great place to hang out with family and friends as long as you avoid big tourist weekends! That is the biggest problem is the irresponsible tourists and drunks who have no consideration for the beach or the locals that keep it clean! It is nice to go to now and in the fall otherwise it needs to be a during the week trip. And to keep it safe you are better off with other vehicles and a fire for light

I was there on Saturday and

I was there on Saturday and I saw a tent right in the middle of the path of vehicles and wondered why it want by the dunes where the other tents are. Being ran over by a vehicle
is why I don't want to sleep in a tent on the north end and have a drunk run me over.

Really? CB brought raised this omen up

If you let people on the beach with beer and 4x4 vehicles its going to happen.. It is a wonder it didn't happen sooner and there haven't been more injuries and fatalities...

It is a known fact.. People go out there to camp and get (*&%(*% up.. FUBAR'd...

Its not a family thing, its only a party thing...

Don't look for someone to pin it on if you are the one who created the environment for this to fester... Carolinna Bach brought this on their selves.... It used to be a good place to go fishing, drop in a jet ski and drive the family out... Now its nothing but a drunken drug crazed orgy on weekend nights...

Maybe everyone will run over everyone and those of us who used to go out on the beach with our families can go back out once again...

anger issue??

Wow, you seem like a real jerk. Before you go wishing everyone one would get ran over on the north end you should stop and think... these are people you are talking about. Someone's daughter, son, mother, father & ect. How would you feel if we all wished you would take a ride on your jet ski and not return from your trip. How would you & your loved ones feel about this remark? Sounds like its just what the north end needs to run off everyone that hangs out now and have nothing but people like you that obviously have anger issues and get all worked up and start wishing to inflict pain or death on others. oh yeah that sounds like a much safer beach area with a bunch of mad at the world jerks. now that's a place i would want to keep children away from. angery men that has a ticking bomb inside of them.... oh what a relaxing time that would be :/ For your information most of the north end people are mostly country folks that own a 4x4 and taking advantage of opportunity to have a fun day at the beach and unwind. Drinking and parting is EVERYWHERE bad things happen EVERYWHERE.... look around you, it is not just the north end. I go out there on many weekends with my dogs and my family and never have any trouble with anyone. We park are spot and mind our business in our section that we park our truck. Maybe if I went looking for trouble I would find it but I choose to mind my own business and not worry about what the guy 3 cars down is drinking

Boring

You sound like a real blast to be around

Really? CB Brought raised this omen up - really?

First, not even your title line makes sense.

Don't look for someone to pin it on if you are the one who created the environment for this to fester... Carolinna Bach brought this on their selves

So....don't look for the 1 drunk person that got so drunk he decided to drive at 3 am and ran clear over a tent. I was out there, I did not see a plethora (look that one up) of vehicles driving around like a rodeo with young whore girls blowing everyone while cracking glow sticks and splashing the liquid all over their faces. I also didn't see an orgy comparable to that of Roman gladiator times, with domination and smut, chokers handcuffs ropes etc.

What I saw....camp fires, tents, bonfires, cold beer, parked trucks on accessories with Jason Aldean and Eric Church playing. One person or the car full of people was responsible for running over the guy, and from the looks of the quotes the tent was not in that safe of a place. My tent was safely located between my car and my friends truck...in hopes that someone would either see the barricades or cause enough damage to their vehicle to be stopped.

In the event everyone that enjoys going out to the north end to drink and have a good camp out session on Friday/Saturday night does die though....please enjoy your jet ski and fishing in the dark of the night (moron...why don't you just go do that during the day when you can see...there are police out there all day stopping preventing the horrible orgy's and drug parties you are fearful of).

Side note - in a few years...your children will probably be the ones out there.

agreed 100%...couldn't have

agreed 100%...couldn't have said it better myself.

Really

Now that's funny..............I don't care what anyone says. I am not referring to the situatiuon but this young persons take on the situation. People are quick to judge others actions without having been present. This was an unfortunate incident and I hope this person recovers. Everybody be safe! By the way.......I wouldn't camp out on the beach unless I knew I could do so safely......preferably in a camper.
