THE RANT: Where's Walter?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY'S 'THE RANT' BY NEWS DIRECTOR SCOTT PICKEY) -- When the North Carolina General Assembly redrew the 3rd Congressional District, it extended it from the Virginia state line, down through Pender County and into Downtown Wilmington.

I guess Rep. Walter Jones didn't get the memo, because to my knowledge, he's made no effort to come down and introduce himself to his new constituents. I haven't even seen any of his campaign signs on the side of the road. Is Jones that comfy up in Washington? Why would the folks in Pender County and Downtown Wilmington feel comfortable voting for this guy to represent them if they don't even know him?

On the other hand, his opponent Frank Palombo made the effort. The former New Bern Police Chief set up an interview here at the station not only to introduce himself to the managers; he stayed and did an interview with our Political Editor Kevin Wuzzardo. Kevin says he's also reached out to the Jones campaign, and no one has even had the courtesy to call or e-mail him back.

I'm not suggesting who anyone should vote for Tuesday, but I can tell you that one of the candidates is working a lot harder to represent you in Washington than the other. Maybe that should tell you something.

For those suggesting Walter Jones has been in office too long, and has become a career politician, Think Again. Walter Jones is such a strong, independent minded supporter of his constituents he has been rountinely criticized in Washington by his party leaders for voting against bills that he thinks spend too much, or don't do enough to support the troops. And it has gotten him in trouble from time to time. Don't take my word, look it up! If you want to send a message to career politicians, the LAST thing you should do is vote against Walter Jones. He has earned the right to be re-elected for his support of eastern North Carolina.

Jones has no interest in the voters in eastern North Carolina. He never holds town-halls. He never does any kind of public forum. He thinks the seat is his by default. That's the mindset of the career politician and Walter Jones is every bit the career politician. It's time for change. I'm voting for the candidate who cares about the voters, the candidate who will find solutions to the problems we face, the candidate who will not sit back and coast to retirement. I'm voting for Frank Palombo.

It seems to me that after 18 years of being in congress that Mr. Jones has become arrogant and has lost sight of why he is in Washington. He is there to serve ALL the people of the 3rd district. As new members of the 3rd district the people of Pender and New Hanover counties have every right to expect as much attention as the people of the congressman's home county. Mr. Palombo who lives in New Bern has been all over the 3rd district in the past 4 months. He has promised to hold "town hall meetings" around the district if elected. The idea is to listen to the concerns of the people and let them know what is going on in Washington. This is obviously a concept lost on Mr. Jones. Word is that except for a few "cronies" and "power players" Mr. Jones never takes the time to actually talk to the people he represents in any part of the district. He did not even attend his own district's convention. Enough said!

He's also the rep for some places right by UNCW. Found that out at the polling place by surprise.

to vote in our modern day world is we can not know what part of their BS is real.

I am a Joe Biden fan. The reason is that I have read his bio, and know more about him than most of his detractors.

If we (GOD FORBID ) Ever faced another major problem, and needed the VP to step in....... Joe could handle it.

In response to the topic of Rep. Walter Jones not visiting parts of his new district you tell us about your feelings for, of all people, Joe Biden.

Uhh ... Maybe it's just me, but I'm not quite getting the connection.
