ILM encourages early check-in during security updates

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Work to update security technology at Wilmington International Airport could mean some slowdowns getting through TSA screeners for a while.

Airport Deputy Director Julie Wilsey says new full body image scanners should arrive May 30. It will take a couple weeks to install them.

The renovations and upgrades mean the passenger screening area has been reduced to just one lane. To avoid missing a flight, the airport suggests passengers arrive at least two hours before their scheduled departure.

All the work should be done by late June.

Is this because

we have such a high concentration of Arab / Muslim peoples in this region?

Having a choice of being

Having a choice of being irradiated or being groped by a TSA screener (they aren't "officers") shouldn't be a pre-condition to getting on an airplane in the United States. After 9/11, the only meaningful changes were the fortification of cockpit doors and the paradigm shift in the mindset of passengers to resist hijackers. Walk through metal detectors are a proven method of screening passengers for firearms and arguably more effective than MMW or backscatter machines. For all of the people who throw their hands up and say "oh well, anything for safety": what happens when this moves outside of the airport? Will you feel the same way if you have to submit to this sort of search to traverse an interstate highway or go to a shopping center?

So tell me 11 years later has the freedom we've traded for the perception of "security" worth it?

Flying Security

Catching a flight is not a is a matter of convience. If you do not like the approved safety methods for all and not just you, you have every right to exercise your freedom and choose an alternative method of travel. I think they should screen outside of the airport...what do you have to hide other than modesty?

I will take protection over modesty anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Not all terrorist are Arabs as implicated by another posting.

The terrorist that hijacked the planes on September 11, 2001 were only armed with box cutter type devices and/or knives, not firearms.

Small price to pay for convience. I'd rather discuss carry on rates.
