House gives final approval to anti-annexation bills

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) -- The state House of Representatives has given final approval to two bills blocking forced annexation in North Carolina.

This afternoon the House passed House Bill 5 by a vote of 66-50, which overturns the annexation of Monkey Junction, areas around Southport and several others around the state. Those cities cannot try again for 12 years to try and annex the same areas.

The House also passed House Bill 925, which gives voters in an annexed area the chance to vote on a proposed annexation. The bill passed 72-45. That's a key number, because the 72 votes in favor represents 3/5 of the full House. If the governor vetoes the bill, the House would need a 3/5 majority to override it. The Senate would need 30 votes for an override. The bill passed that chamber on its final reading 30-14.

When the de-annexation takes place...

maybe the residents of Monkey Junction, who were annexed, can all gather on both sides of South College Road and wave bye-bye to the City...or at least wave bye-bye with one finger.
