CFPUA hit gas line, homes evacuated in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Approximately 15 homes were evacuated this morning because of a natural gas leak at Hanover and McRae Streets in Wilmington.

A 3/4" gas line ruptured when CFPUA crews were digging. The Wilmington Fire Department and Piedmont Gas responded around 10 a.m. to evacuate homes and keep the area secured during repairs.

CFPUA spokeswoman Carey Ricks says the utility had been told Monday by No Cuts/Piedmont Gas that the area had been marked properly, but Ricks and WFD Battalion Chief David Hines said the gas line was not marked.

Crews reopened the streets just after 11 a.m.

give them another pay

give them another pay raise....

CFPUA does use a locate

CFPUA does use a locate service but unfortunately in this case, it is our understanding that the lines were not marked appropriately (and please note that the marking is not done by CFPUA). Our crew was working within an area that they thought otherwise safe to work and excavate in. As Chief Hines clearly states, 'the gas line was not marked.'

Guess there goes another

Guess there goes another rate increase !!!!!!!

How Did THIS happen?

Aren't they the ones that tell you to call before you dig? But here again its the CFPUA...

Hey CFPUA Leaders...may wanna check out the below link.

Like the Brunsco deputy who was demoted...

I'm betting the crew leader of the CFPUA crew on this job will be demoted from pickup sitter to shovel leaner. :)

It seems in cFpUa they promote the incompetent to management positions.

In addition to billing CFPUA...

does anyone no if CFPUA is required to get No-Cuts to come in and locate whether there are any lines before digging?

I wonder if Piedmont Gas...

will bill CFPUA (us) for the gas that escaped before the leak was fixed? I know Piedmont does if a private contractor cuts a gas line.
