WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity volunteers finished early this afternoon on their goal to build five homes in seven days. The project is in honor of the group's 25th anniversary, which helps provide lower income families with a chance at home ownership.

The vision is to provide affordable housing for hardworking families in the community. The Habitat Builders Blitz completed the Cottages at Cornerstone subdivision, which now has 32 Habitat homes.

Habitat for Humanity teamed up with local homebuilders, volunteers, and sponsors to make the American Dream come true for five families.

"We are really very grateful for the professional builders who have come out to make this happen for us and for our homeowners," Habitat Development Director Kitty Yerkes said.

"It's amazing," Habitat Construction Manager Esmond Anderson said. "I mean, these builders came together, and they did a good job planning, getting everybody lined up and to finish a day kind of ahead a little bit, it's great."

Construction workers aren't the only ones putting in hard work. Homeowners put in more than 200 hours to get a new lease on life.

"This is a great opportunity I would never pass up, and even though it's hard work, I'm a full-time mother, just had a newborn baby, work full time, I just do it," soon-to-be homeowner Sherrill Bowman said.

Workers and volunteers look forward to a relaxing day tomorrow when all their hard work is realized.

The homeowners will receive their keys during a special celebration tomorrow afternoon.
