WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- City council unanimously approved a fee for runners who participate in city races. It also approved a fee schedule.

It will require all city race participants to pay an extra dollar for each race they run.

The city's Recreation and Downtown Services Superintendent proposed the fee as a way to maintain greenways, trails, streets and sidewalks.

Fee

Pay the fee!

Tolls and fees all around!! People who think they know more than the AUTHORITIES should have to pay twice!!

Pay the toll!

Pay the fee!!

want to play, you got to pay!!

Saffo and Sterling doing a fine job as leaders of the uninformed and left out of the loop for a reason masses.

Telling ya'll, no annexation...no free lunches and tolls all around.

Fees for Events

Wait and see. This is just the beginning. I would venture to say fees for the Sharks, Hammerheads ect, ect will come to fruition. I understand the thinking behind the approval of this fee. After all, it does cost the City to perform security for these events. But, it will come to light what is good for one will be good for the other as in subsidizing leases to collegiate summer league and professional teams just to name a couple. Youth teams will be next. It cost money to maintain those fields. Most all of the facilities where soccer, lacrosse, baseball and football for youth as well as the aforementioned are City or County owned and is it fair to charge one and not the other? I don't know the current budgets and what it costs to maintain and oversee all of these venues but I know Ben McCoy and Josh Fulton can probably inform us. This will more than likely be challenged somehow and sometime down the road so expect more of the same. The gate has been opened.

That's what user fees are all about

The people who play and enjoy soccer, baseball, lacrosse and other sports SHOULD pay to maintain the facilities.

The people who ride WAVE buses SHOULD pay higher fares to support WAVE.

We can no longer afford "governmnet as Santa Claus," and user fes are a great way to achieve that end without killing the events in question.

It's really quite simple.

The fee is optional. If you don't want to pay the dollar then don't block our roads with your running.

Fee for drinking or eating too much!!!

Unbelievable Wilmington City Council! If you are going to charge any fees I suggest they be for the overly drunk bar patrons stumbling through downtown Wilmington after 11pm. yelling, littering and causing car accidents. Or how about smokers or people who eat too much downtown?! We are paying the health insurance premiums for these people. Instead you come up with the genius plan to penalize responsible citizens assembling to promote health and inspire good habits.

lol

these guys haven't met a tax they didn't like! I sure hope that all race organizers move their races OUT of Wilmington...I for one will NEVER pay the fee...no matter what the cause!

Move signs, Run Free

The ink wasn't dry on the judge's ruling to overturn the original petition law granting property owners a voice in restraining forced annexation before the People's Republic of Wilmington moved their city limits signs south of monkey junction.

The legislature has enacted new law overturning the city's annexation and moving the city limits back. However the signs remain.

The signs should be moved immediately so that race promoters and non profits will know where they can run free, free from the city's runners' fees. Run free and spend your money and time enjoying the wilds outside the city limits. Run at Veteran's Park, along River Rd, onto Pleasure Island and beautiful Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, & Ft Fisher.

COW: Move your damn signs back to the city limits and let them rust there for a long, long time. Live free, Run free.

Live free, run free

You got it! Live free, run free, block all the roads you want during the height of tourist season down your way. Block all of Carolina Beach Road. Start at the Walmart and run all the way to the beach. Just don't use city resources to control traffic and clean up after the race, and keep the tourist dollars in the city (since they won't be able to get to your precious beach). By the way, if you can't afford paying an extra dollar on the $60+ registration fee, maybe you shouldn't be racing.

GUEST?

THEY ALREADY HAVE MOPEDS AND BICYCLES DOWN THAT WAY AND GET ALONG JUST FINE. ALSO, THE SHERRIFS DEPT. TO CONTROL TRAFFIC.THEY CAN GET IN AND OUT OF THE COUNTY VIA THE FERRY. MIGHT TAKE A LITTLE LONGER AND TAKE MORE MONEY, BUT IT CAN BE DONE. ALSO THEY HAVE A VERY SMALL AIRPORT AT PILOTS RIDGE THAT COULD START UP A BUSINESS WITH BRUNSWICK CO. AIRPORT. ALSO, IS MONKEY JUNCTION, SOUTH THE ONLY AREA IN THE COUNTY? OR DO YOU JUST HAVE A BEEF WITH SOMEONE DOWN THAT WAY? DO YOU RUN OR RACE? I DON'T HAVEN'T GOT THE ENERGY.

Next up, the Azalea Festival

Now, since they are charging one class of individuals that raises money for charities - the runners don't get anything out of these races other than a sense of pride - they need to charge the heck out of the Azalea Festival group.

This thing has evolved into a flea market, with a bit of entertainment. There's alot more money going into the pockets of the organizers, and commercial participants than is going to any charitable organization. Of course, with this new "fee", the Festival's 5K/10K/Fun Walk participants will now have to pay their fee. Walk / run - what difference does it make.

It was recently announced that the city has an extra $1 million it has to waste on something, and they come out with this petty plan.
