WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Pastor Clifford Barnett sat down with 'Good Morning Carolina' anchor Ashley Jacobs to talk about a program to make sure children in need of food get healthy meals this summer.

Once the school year ends, many children are left without meals they had been getting during the school year. Watch the whole interview to learn more about the program.

Meals for children are served at the following locations:

Hope Baptist Church: lunch and dinner

Lee's Chapel Amez Church: brunch

New Beginnings Church: breakfast and lunch

Price Cathedral Amez Church: lunch and dinner

St. Andrews Amez Church: lunch and dinner

St. Luke Amez Church: breakfast and lunch

Warner Temple Amez Church: breakfast and lunch

Amazing

It is amazing to me at some of the comments made on this story. I applaud the churches for providing these meals. They are needed. Yes there will be those who take advantage of it like they do everything else. Unfortunately, you can'd stop the parasites! But there are those who are in need:

Think of the mother with three whose husband walked out on her, leaving her with a house payment, car payment and other bills to pay as well as feeding and taking care of her children. Yes, she has a good job, but these days, that money doesn't go far when paying bills and keeping food on the table. Is she a deadbeat? No - several years ago she worked three jobs to help take care of those children. She doesn't get food stamps because she makes too much money; she is not eligible for other help because she makes a few dollars above the requirement.

There are children in our area that go hungry every day, whether you believe it or not. Perhaps you should get out of our comfort zone and step out and serve at a food pantry or a place that serves meals and you will see. If you are not willing to put down your fork and knife long enough to see others in need, then shut up.

What a tale of woe

Ever heard of child support from the errant father?

So let me see if I understand this....

Their parents don't have to feed them breakfast or lunch for nine months of the year, but can't use that financial break to save enough money to feed them for only three months?

I just don't see how anyone

I just don't see how anyone can consider this a bad thing.

God Bless All Involved

This is so sorely needed, here and across the country. My thanks go to all who have worked to make this happen. My mother established this program in our town many years ago (I'm not saying it was her idea, just that she also did this). It's the right thing to do, it's the Christian thing to do, and I'm sure there are rich rewards in doing so. God bless you all and the children you serve.

it's great that they won't

it's great that they won't go hungry since the people claiming them as dependents can use the food stamps they get to fund other sources of entertainment in their own lives.

Unless, the laws have

Unless, the laws have changed, you can't use food stamps to buy things that aren't food.

that they won't

I was going to leave this alone for a minute but its jack@@@@s like you that get under my skin.Every family in the great city of wilmington do not get food stamps. If they do you can believe they buy food with them. Are you in the store during this time.If you notice the list that are doing this (they are churches) they are concern with the young people of this community. You can trust and believe they are doing more than just feeding them food they are trying to give directions on life and the why they should carry themselves still in society. You are a jack@@@s,with your freedom of speech and all.

Oooh! He obviously hit a sore spot, Tweety!

Unfortunately, he's spot on! Every one of us have seen EBT recipients place their two orders on the conveyor belt; the family food, then the beer and cigarettes that they pay for with a roll of cash.

If your kids are hungry, it's YOUR responsibility to feed them, no one else's. Why would anyone be so careless, negligent, and selfish as to have a child they couldn't feed or provide for? Well, that's a rhetorical question as we all know the answer: TANF, EBT, WIC, Medicaid, and Section 8/Public Housing. "The suckers will feed my baby, and if I have another, I'll rate a larger apartment!"

However, to quote Bob Dylan, "The times they are a-changin'" We can't afford to keep coddling and carrying incompetent life mis-managers who can accomplish nothing but spitting out the next Medicaid recipient. The country is going broke because of people who contribute absolutely nothing, but suck the system dry....

...and that can't continue. The largest demographic group of contributors of wealth in the country's history, the Baby Boomers, are retiring by the millions. Tax revenues are stalling, and pretty soon the taxpayer wallet will be empty. We can't keep subsidizing bums, so you had better hope these restaurants keep feeling sorry for your kids.

The best "War on Poverty" is keeping your pants zipped until YOU can provide for your offspring, Tweety.

tweety

Sore spot, yeah it did we are talking about children going without food ,i am not talking about being hungry until dinner is ready.I am talking about not knowing when you are going to eat.We can place blame at whomever doorstep we like, there are children going hungry in this community. My kids eat everyday.See its not about me its about children going hungry and as long as my family and i can help so a child will not be hungry we will continue to do that and if you are as smart as you claim you know its just not inner city kids that aren't eating like they should. Like i said early Jack@@@@Sike you are part of the problem not the solution.

Yeah....I'm the problem....

Never been to prison, worked non-stop since I was seventeen, pay an obscene amount of tax every year, and always made sure MY kids were taken care of.

What reckless behavior, huh?

But thanks for excusing me from being part of the solution, because responsible people can't solve a problem caused by other, irresponsible people.

i'm the problem

I read the last few comments between you and tweety.I don't always agree with what he says or you.The thing is we can sitt in judgement of each other all day but there are children out in this community that go to bad hungry wake up hungry not just black not just white but children of all race and nationality. You get on the bandwagon the community should do this for inner city children teach them to live this way not that way. When churches step in to do just that, now its still a problem. If you just sit back and complain well you are part of the problem. You never been to prison niether have i worked hard since i graduated from high school always took care of my family. One thing my parents raised us to do if you can help some one less fortune than you always do that not for anyone to pat you on the back do it because its the right and godly thing to do.No child on this earth i know of chose their parents. We are talking about children.

No one, child or adult is

No one, child or adult is going to go hungry in this country with all the handouts from Social Services, free breakfast/lunch programs at schools, food banks, etc. Got to agree with the previous poster.

child or adult

Well Guest jack@@@@@ss i see you are out of touch also.Read it again and you might see what he was trying to say without saying.Even with all the different resources.Their are children that go to bed hungry and wake up hungry.Just look around at the various cities that have week end programs that help feed children. There are a lot of proud people in this city that think getting help from DSS is a bad thing. For all that help those less fortune its a good thing that you do.

So there. Harrumph!

That's right. Some of us are less fortune. Some of us can't even afford a space between sentences.

Less fortune; that is rich material. You cant make this stuff up. Hah!

harrumph!

You have a good meal today, because at the end of the day,we shall feed those that are less fortune. Not asking you for a thing. You know there are a lot of good people in this community.

You just don't have a clue.

You just don't have a clue. It must be nice up there in your ivory tower where every one lives a life of luxury and doesn't have to want for anything ever. Not everyone who goes hungry is of school age, therefore they don't have access to the school lunches you mentioned. Not everyone lives where there is a food bank, homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Not everyone who goes without food believes that it is okay to accept government assistance. Just because you don't know of anyone who goes without food, that doesn't mean they are not out there.

By the grace of God, I have never actually ever had to miss a meal in my life. There were times growing up, when we didn't have much. I can only imagine what it was like for my mother to borrow bread from our neighbor so we could have toast for breakfast.
