OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) -- Summertime is here, and many folks beat the heat this weekend in Oak Island at the annual Beach Day.

The day all about family, fun and food is also a part of the Southport-Oak Island Fourth of July celebration. Kids of all ages competed in beach volleyball, cornhole and bocce tournaments. Some chose to step inland and ride the slides and climb the rock wall.

"Just giving the kids something to do, giving the adults something to do, giving back,” said Oak Island Parks and Recreation Director Kellie Beeson. “It's an attraction to Oak Island and something that folks, when they are vacationing here, it's something that we are giving back that they can come and enjoy."

Beach Day is about having fun and honoring history by celebrating the merger of the Towns of Yaupon Beach and Long Beach into the Town of Oak Island. It has been a part of the Fourth of July festival for more than 15 years.
