WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The morning of July 4, 2011, Carol Ann Johnson, 59, was found dead in her home off Pine Valley Drive in Wilmington. Now on the anniversary of her murder, her family continues to search for answers in hopes her case will not go cold, and that her killer is caught.

"I think it's very cowardly for them to not come forward," Johnson's niece Melanie White said. "I hope that something inside them changes and they they want to turn themselves in."

White contacted us on behalf of her family to plead with the community not to forget her aunt.

"She was fun and caring and creative," White said. "She was just a lot of fun to go with. I remember all the concerts we'd go to in the summer. She used to make my costumes for me for Halloween. She was very creative. She was a very dear aunt to me."

Police say Johnson was stabbed to death in her home and discovered lifeless by her fiance.

"It's surreal," White said. "We've never had anybody in our family who was murdered. It's quite shocking and still kind of hard to swallow. We miss her so much every single day. But we are hopeful, and we are really praying that we will find what happened and that justice will be done."

White said she and her family have a great relationship with investigators from the Wilmington Police Department. She remains hopeful and asks that anyone with any information come forward.

Because of the holiday, we could not reach Wilmington Police investigators for an update on the case.

"fiance"

They had broken up - or at least Carol had broken off the wedding.

broken up

She told many of her friends she had broken up with him 2 weeks before she was murdered. They gave their statements to the police.

Carol was a wonderful person

Carol was a wonderful person who loved life. She would give you the shirt off of her back. Her murder is senseless. Unfortunately the police need airtight evidence so they can prosecute the person who did this to her. They know who they are and I can't believe that a day goes by that they aren't looking over their shoulder wondering when the police are going to catch up with them. When the trial does come I want to be their to see the person's reaction. I want to see them rot in jail for the rest of their lives and have to live with the guilt of taking such a wonderful life. Rest in Peace Carol. Those who knew you are still thinking about you.

A year on lab work???

By the way. The news said the police are STILL waiting for lab results. What in the world kind of test takes a YEAR to run?? Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.

Knowing and being able to

Knowing and being able to prove in court are two very different things.

why?

Are you sure you don't know who murdered Carol? Seems like there are those who do know. . why don't you?

Sometimes

Sometimes it's not figuring out who did the crime, but proving it. You can't just arrest someone because you think they did it. You only have one chance to prove it in a court of law.

It's what the police do.

"You can't just arrest someone because you think they did it."

It happens all the time. Whether they're found guilty or not is up to the jury.
