Kure Beach now considering smoking ban

READ MORE: Kure Beach now considering smoking ban
SMOKINGSTORY.JPG

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- First Wrightsville, then Carolina, and now Kure. All of New Hanover County’s beaches are considering putting a smoking ban in place.

"If we can get them to pick up after themselves, it would be mighty nice,” Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth said.

"Teach people to not throw trash,” Carolina Beach Mayor Ray Rothrock said. “Not just cigarette butts, but not throw any trash on the ground, out the car, on the beach, anywhere. Don't litter. That's the solution."

"There are many smokers who do take care of their cigarette butts, but there are many that don't,” added Wrightsville Beach Mayor David Cignotti.

All three of New Hanover County’s beach leaders are now talking about banning butts on the beach. But some beach goers are not in favor.

"I smoke, so I just think everybody should use a can or a trash can or put them somewhere in a little pouch,” beach visitor Tammy Hawkins said.

Not all smokers are as spotless with their cigs.

The idea of a smoking ban started with Wrightsville Beach and spread down the coast. Cignotti said he thinks a ban fits the feel of Wrightsville, but says each town must decide separately.

Unlike Wrightsville, which has put the ban up for public vote, Carolina and Kure Beach town councils still have the power to approve or deny it.

"Enforcing it is going to be a problem,” Lambeth said. “It'll mean more police and longer hours."

"We don't need to put another ordinance in place that we cannot enforce,” Rothrock said.

"I do think it's enforceable,” Cignotti said. “It won't be perfect. I've said before, yes, if someone wants to go and get in the water and smoke a cigarette, they can."

Lambeth said Kure Beach is waiting for Wrightsville’s vote to make a decision. While Rothrock says Carolina Beach may say yes or no as early as next month.

SMOKING ON BEACHES

PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SMOKE ON THE BEACH. SMOKING GOES HAND IN HAND WITH DRINKING AND PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER THE US TO RELAX ON THE BEACH. SO HERES A SCENARIO: GUY SAVES ALL YEAR TO BRING HIS FAMILY TO KURE BEACH FOR SEVEN DAYS. HE WANTS TO RELAX, DRINK A FEW BEERS AND MAYBE CUT LOOSE AND SMOKE A CIGAR TO CELEBRATE HIS GOOD FORTUNE. NEXT THE BEACH POLICE GIVE HIM A TICKET AND HE FEELS LIKE A FUGITIVE. WHATS NEXT: NO DRINKING ON THE BEACH? NO GOING TO THE BEACH ON SUNDAY? NO THONGS ON THE BEACH? NO BIKINIS ON THE BEACH? MANDATORY SUNSCREEN ON THE BEACH? THE BEACH IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. LEAVE IT THAT WAY OR PEOPLE WILL GO TO OTHER BEACHES AND THE AREA WILL LOSE MUCH NEEDED REVENUE. NORTH CAROLINA WAS FOUNDED THROUGH SMOKING. TOBACCO ROAD PAVED THIS STATE. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER JESSE HELMS, DAVID HUNT, RJ REYNOLDS AND LIGGET MEYERS?

smokeing ban

ok , this is getting out of hand here and takeing on our rights we have the right to buy the smokes and we have the right to pay the taxes fo them too . i dont think it there rights to tell us what we can do or cant, i dont drink beer or any boozze but i see budwiser bush , pbr , and yes miller cans on the beachs and i also see people fighting and driveing drunk , but i dont see them trying to slap a fin on them for littering , i also see kids haveing them little drinks in there hands and droping them on the beach and not picking them up .. but here is the kicker ,, i have seen in carolina beach and all the beachs they dont empty there trash cans but maybe one time a day ,, so if you going to ban smokeing then ban food and drinks to ,, if a law come to the beachs like this someone will file a law suite and will win over this , will the towns have that money to go to court over and over and over ,,,, think about it

smoking bans

if you are gonna ban the taxpayers from smoking then stop using taxpayer dollars to re nourish your beaches!!!!

The good thing about laws

The good thing about laws is that most people comply. Most residents here are good people. Having a law in place will cut the butts on the beach immediately.

As for enforcing the law, a few tickets will give incentive for the rest.

The fact is that we'll always have few people that don't respect law or the town or the rights of the majority. Its sad but true. At least with these few the police have the right to approach them. Violate one law and you'll find it likely they've been violating other laws. This could be a good thing.

I don't expect our very excellent, professional police force to spend their time writing tickets in leiu of addressing more serious isues, but if they write a few (like they do for speeding) it will motivate 99% of the people on the beach.

Send your NHC beach business to Topsail Island!

I find all of this laughable! Go ahead and ban smoking at all of your New Hanover county beaches! We will be happy to have your tourist and locals business/revenues here on Topsail Island. Between the smoking bans and high parking rates, you are just driving your business to out our way. Our restaurants, shops and beaches will be happy to welcome ANYONE out here. And guess what folks?? We don't charge one cent for parking either! 26 miles of beautiful beaches.......and although we don't like cigarette butts, we'll be happy to pick up after those folks that are spending their hard earned money on our island!! Keep pushing our way!! $$$$$!!!

As an ex-smoker.......

I know this is a tough subject.
On the one hand you've got the "this is a public place" crowd insisting it's a government intrusion in their lives.
On the other hand you've got legitimate concerns from people with kids second hand smoke etc etc etc...

To the smokers I say this: You brought this on yourself. By leaving millions of butts in the sand you provided the evidence needed to allow John Q Public, and the government officials to point the finger of blame squarely where it belonged - at YOU, the group who is now howling in "righteous indignation".
You ever heard of field stripping your butts? Putting them in the trash? Now you claim you're being picked on, and that YOU have every right to smoke where you want, when you want. sorry but in this case smokers should, and will lose.........

Best Regards
Vog

actually....

In response to what Vog46 said, I think there are more smokers out there who do field strip their cigs, extinguish them completely, then throw them out than he/she gave credit for. However, you are also right that too many of them are irresponsible. How about not making smoking illegal on the beach, but doing increased enforcement and heavier ticketing of those who are caught littering a cig on a beach? Plus hit those who litter cig butts onto the beach, with a higher fine?

It's a little harsh to pass a total smoking ban, when there are responsible smokers out there who do properly dispose of them. And also, why only go after smokers who litter cig butts, and also go after others who cause major litter probs on the beach, such as those who litter fast food bags/cups/wrappers/etc. on the beach, paper wrappers of various disposable products, etc? It's wrong to only go after smokers, when they are ridiculously scapegoated by anti-smoking groups and others because it's the in thing to do. Leave them alone, for the love of god.

Are all of you people crazy?

Are all of you people crazy? I thought you wanted tourists to come to the beach. If they can't smoke on the beach, can they smoke outside the apt. they rent? what do we have in New Hanover County? A bunch of meek mice playing follow the leader? How much second hand smoke can you get on the beach, with a breeze blowing? Littering is the problem and i haven't heard of any complaints from KB or CB before. Guess people will start going to the mountains or else where. This is getting ridiculous. Just a bunch of copy cats. I won't pay to help erosion on either of these 3 beaches, if i have a choice. By the way, i,m not a smoker.just fed up that just a few people are taking away everyones rights.

money has to come from somewhere

New agenda for funding the city and court costs now that no massive tourist bar fights happen anymore no cars are on the streets to pull over after midnight and annexation $$$ is not happening. The bazillions of officers hired in this area have to be paid somehow.Tired of descendant spoiled brat wealthy kids of 1950's politicians running our budgets like they have any clue how to manage money.Money they actually earned working themselves and not inherited from daddy.

Get a grip. Non-smokers

Get a grip. Non-smokers don't own the outdoors air. Problem with butts? We already have littering laws. Enforce it! What's next? Banning smoking inside town and city limits? If you want to ban something - ban alcohol. I have never heard of anyone being killed driving while under the influence of tobacco. Alcohol cause more lost time from work and heath related issue than smoking.
