RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The political arms of Planned Parenthood affiliates in North Carolina have endorsed Democrat Walter Dalton for governor this fall, saying he will stand up for women's health issues if elected.

The separate "action funds" of Planned Parenthood Health Systems and Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina announced their decisions Thursday to back the lieutenant governor and not Republican nominee Pat McCrory.

A spokeswoman for one affiliate said Dalton is needed to block likely Republican efforts in 2013 at the Legislature to turn back progress further on women's health initiatives. The General Assembly passed legislation the past two years to halt state funding for Planned Parenthood and to place more restrictions on abortion.

Planned Parenthood offers preventive health care, birth control, annual breast cancer exams and also provides abortions.
