SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) – The Surf City Volunteer Fire Department grabbed the bull by the horns Labor Day weekend in the name of charity.
To raise money for their junior firefighter division the department held a two-day rodeo just outside of Surf City on Route 17.
Junior firefighters intern at the Surf City Fire Department with the hope of learning the ropes of fire fighting.
Portions of the proceeds from the weekend rodeo will go towards helping the junior firefighters from Surf City reach their ultimate goal of winning the state junior competition in Salisbury.
"The event means a lot to me,” said Austin Cross, a Surf City junior firefighter. “Going out there and trying to prove to the rest of North Carolina what we are and how we do things and show the rest of the juniors out there how good we are."
After the cost of sending the junior fire fighters to Salisbury is taken out of the proceeds the rest of the money raised will go towards upgrading outdated equipment at the Surf City Fire Department.
