Parking space becomes park to raise green space awareness

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A downtown parking space was turned into a park of its own today.

Park(ing) Day is an annual event that raises awareness the need for green space in cities.

Wilmington Downtown Inc. and UNCW's Masters of Public Administration program paid for and decorated a parking spot on Front Street complete with plants and places to sit.

"We're an urban environment," volunteer Mike Lardieri said. "People love green space. Most great cities have them. New Orleans, New York, Charleston, Savannah, they all have green space, and we have a little bit of great real estate left, and we should turn it into a park."

Organizers say Park(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for changes to urban infrastructure.

Another one of those feel-good activities designed to help people feel good about the activity they feel good about.

"Park(ing) Day", an annual "event", followed closely by "Peanut Butter And Jelly Day" and then "Feel Good About Your Elbows Day."

I'm surprised...

they didn't have everyone hug a tree as well.

with this city council...

that idea extends to suburban space as well..
