Non-profit PTA sues for-profit rival

Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) -- The nonprofit PTA is suing a for-profit rival amid a decades-long slide in membership.

The National Parent Teacher Association filed a lawsuit against PTO Today on Wednesday in US District Court in Chicago. The suit accuses the upstart of trademark infringement and denigrating the established group in a bid to siphon off members.

The Chicago-based PTA boasted 12 million members in its heyday in the '60s. But it has seen its ranks dwindle to less than half that. PTO Today put itself on a collision course with the PTA by setting itself up as an alternative.

The lawsuit also names the parent company of PTO Today, School Family Media Inc.

PTO founder Tim Sullivan says he doesn't "know a single thing" his group is doing to break the law.
