WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -– The New Hanover County Commission will soon have two new members after Tuesday's election. The three spots up for vote went to Republicans Beth Dawson, Woody White and Democratic incumbent Jonathan Barfield.
"I'm quite honored to have received the vote of trust and confidence from the citizens of New Hanover County," Commissioner-elect Beth Dawson said. "The citizens have a lot of significant issues on the table right now. Trash is one of the top issues, our sewer, our schools are overcrowded. We have a lot of significant issues that we need to get to work."
Barfield was reelected for another four-year term. He said great things can be accomplished with the new board.
"We really need to press into the issues that are important to the citizens of our community," Barfield said. "Our number one issue right now is solid waste. What do we do with our landfill? What do we do with that situation long term and really bring the new board together to make sure we're a good fit, and I think we are with the folks I'm looking at winning right now. It's going to be a great board moving forward."
