BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A man is jail charged with murdering a woman in Brunswick County last week.

Linnie Mae Ward was found dead in her home in the Longwood Community a week ago. Today, sheriff's deputies say they have made an arrest.

Overnight investigators charged 51-year-old Richard Hugh Grissett of Shallotte with first degree murder.

Sheriff John Ingram said today investigators believe Grissett entered Ward's home November 13 to rob her. They believe ward fought back. The autopsy revealed strangulation and blunt force trauma to the face caused her death.

Ingram says Grissett knew Ward.

Grissett had his first court appearance this morning and is in jail without bond.

Deputies executed a search warrant at Grissett's home this afternoon, where they say they found a gun stolen from Ward's home.
