CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) -- An information technology employee at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been arrested on a weapons charge.

Forty-two-year-old Charles Hitlin of Pittsboro was charged with felony possession a gun on educational property. Officers said they found a loaded 9mm handgun in Hitlin's office.

He was head of information technology for UNC's School of Public Health. He was fired Nov. 12, four days after his arrest.

Search warrants say Hitlin was investigated after a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force chatted with someone using a University of North Carolina Chapel Hill computer address. Police say the address was traced to Hitlin.

Attorney Meredith Nicholson says Hitlin is good man who is subject of a far-reaching arm of the government which is spying on computer communications.
