GREENVILLE, NC (AP) -- East Carolina will soon begin a search for a successor to athletic director Terry Holland.
The school said Wednesday that Holland, a 2010 inductee to the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame, plans to transition into an emeritus role once his replacement is hired. He would serve in that role reporting to chancellor Steve Ballard until his contract ends in December 2014.
The 70-year-old former Virginia men's basketball coach has been the AD since 2004. He said he suggested the move to "ensure a smooth and flexible leadership transition."
Under Holland, a Clinton native, the Pirates won two Conference USA football championships while annually playing nonconference matchups with BCS opponents.
The school is also moving to the Big East for football, though it must find a home for its other sports programs.
The school says it will name its Olympic sports complex after Holland.
