RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Pittsboro's mayor says he's running to become North Carolina Democratic Party chairman because he believes party activities in his home county can be imitated to build the Democratic brand statewide from the ground up.

Randy Voller formally announced his candidacy Friday in front of the state party headquarters building in Raleigh. Voller has been mayor since 2005 and became Chatham County Democratic Party chairman two years ago.

Voller said Democratic candidates performed well in Chatham County in last month's election thanks to strong local party interaction with voters and fundraising.

Voller wants to succeed Chairman David Parker, who announced earlier this week he wouldn't seek another two-year term when party activists meet Feb. 2 in Durham.

Outgoing state Sen. Eric Mansfield of Fayetteville says he's also strongly considering running.

Voller can build a winning Democratic Party

This statement is true, and is really an understatement:

"Voller said Democratic candidates performed well in Chatham County in last month's election thanks to strong local party interaction with voters and fundraising."

The Democrats in Chatham County raised over $75,000 and 900 volunteers, and fought a strong electoral campaign on the ground, with hard work and excellent organization. The leadership of Randy Voller was vital to this effort.

In the victory for Joe Hackney's House Seat alone, our opponent had over $100,000 to spend, but lost. Voller also led the County Democratic Party to hold both of the two fiercely contested Board of Commissioner races for the Democrats.

Randy Voller understands how to win, he knows how to organize the Party and deliver the votes needed for Democratic candidates to win. The State Democratic Party needs his leadership right now in order to defeat the money GOP candidates have given to them. Democrats work, Randy Voller works hardest of all, to deliver victory for them. The NC Democratic Party will apply his methods and energy to win if they select him as State Chair of the NC Democratic Party.
