WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The holidays got a little brighter with a miracle on 17th street at New Hanover County Regional Hospital where sick kids were surprised by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. While other children are wondering what toys to add to their Christmas list, these kids just want to feel better. Santa helped grant that wish, if only for a short while.

"My son Caleb is here," said Nick Davis of Leland. "We just brought him here this past Wednesday, and we found out he is a Type 1 Diabetic."

The Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital is home to many sick children during the holidays. To lighten their spirits, staff organized a Christmas party for all the kids. Santa was the first name on the guest list.

"Santa found them in the hospital. They might think that maybe Santa might forget. They are not at home, they are not going to the mall to see him, they are not going to the different places that Santa is because they are sick," said Michele Erich, child-life specialist at the hospital. "This is really exciting for the children who have been sick and are starting to perk up a little bit. Maybe they are still going to rest this afternoon, but maybe for a few minutes they can have a nice time with Santa and their families."

Davis said the event was a success. He says it made his family happy.

"It means a lot. It is a lot of love they are showing us here. It is really cool to see them do this for the kids."

Santa listened to a few last-minute requests, handed out gifts and most importantly, he brought holiday cheer to families dealing with much more than figuring out which presents to open first Christmas morning.

The hospital is always accepting gifts for it's kids. Just give them a call or stop by with your donations.
