WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A man is in jail charged with the beating death of his brother months ago. Boyd Daddison Starnes, 57, is charged with the second-degree murder of Barry Lynn Starnes, 50.
Police say on July 20 they and EMS responded to Solomon Towers at 15 Castle Street for a man complaining of pain after being assaulted. Barry Starnes told police Boyd had assaulted him the day before, but Barry refused to cooperate with law enforcement and said that he did not want a police report. Barry was was treated and released from the hospital within a day.
A week later, on July 27, Barry Starnes was re-admitted to the hospital, still complaining of pain to the areas on his body where he had been hit. Doctors told Barry he was losing a lot of blood internally and that due to his many health issues surgery was not an option.
Wilmington Police responded to the hospital on July 29 after Starnes's family urged him to file a police report due to his failing condition. This is when an officer documented the incident that had occurred on July 20.
Barry Starnes died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center August 2. After a lengthy investigation, results from an autopsy concluded that Starnes died from injuries sustained from blunt force trauma from the assault. The death was then ruled a homicide.
After several conferences with the District Attorney's office, it was determined that a warrant for arrest be issued for second degree murder.
Police charged Boyd Starnes yesterday. He was already in custody at the New Hanover County Jail since being arrested on August 6 for the initial charge of assault inflicting serious bodily injury on Barry.
