ONLY ON 3: Real-life Grinch? Admitted mail thief just wanted Christmas

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- A real-life Grinch is accused of stealing Christmas from nearly 70 people in Carolina Beach. Today, the suspect spoke out and said he just wanted Christmas, too.

Timothy Gillespie, 45 faces nine misdemeanors and one felony. Police say they found bags of stolen mail in his home and expect the number of victims to grow after more investigating.

"It's just, I felt, how can I put it, alone, because there is nobody on the island that I can talk to," Gillespie said. "Nobody wanted to be my friends."

Police arrested Gillespie after finding "bags and bags" of stolen mail in his home. Gillespie targeted at least 68 residents of Carolina Beach.

He said he started stealing mail in early November and up through the holidays, but he says he is no Grinch.

"My purpose was to have a Christmas of myself," he said.

Gillespie said the mail reminded him of Christmas, a holiday he never gets to enjoy any more.

"When I celebrate Christmas, I celebrate it with my family, but I have no family left," Gillespie said.

Gillespie said he learned from his mistakes. He knows he was in the wrong and has turned to god to help him do right.

"I've been reading the Bible and redoing my thoughts not to do it again," he said. "I hope that I can meet the people that I have done this to and apologize to them face to face."

Postal inspectors say if Gillespie is convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.

Gillespie says he has served time before and is prepared to do it again.

HOGWASH.YOU SHOULD HAVE

HOGWASH.YOU SHOULD HAVE TURNED TO GOD BEFORE YOU DID THIS.ITS JUST A PLOY FOR SYMPATHY. LOTS OF PEOPLE DON'T HAVE A FAMILY OR MUCH FOR CHRISTMAS, BUT THEY DON'T TURN TO THEIVERY. YOU COULD HAVE GONE TO ONE OF THE SHELTERS FOR A FREE MEAL AND COMPANIONSHIP. THERES LOTS OF PLACES YOU COULD HAVE GONE FOR SOCIALIZING.YOU'R PREPARED TO SERVE TIME AGAIN? GOOD. THERES LOTS OF PEOPLE THERE THAT YOU CAN MINGLE AND TALK TO.

What?

What? I thought that tampering with the mail was a federal offense! This guy is unreal. His reasoning for doing this is purely irrational.

Think of the people that didn't get their mail. Christmas cards, maybe containing money. Checks and other sensitive material. It is scary. Makes you wonder how many of them will run into trouble because a bill didn't get paid or something important didn't get done because of him.

How many times has he done this before and didn't get caught - makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Alone....

Well, doesn't look like he will be alone next year!

No one wanted to be his friend?

Well perhaps that is because thieves generally do not make good friends. Not to mention this guy looks like the Unabomber.

Give me a break

"I have no one to talk to..." OMG give me a break. You don't go around stealing mail because you're lonely. Join a freaking social group. And honestly, I don't buy this pity party. I believe he was stealing mail to find cash and cards for fraud, probably to fuel a meth habit. Drug addiction fuels mail-identity theft in the majority of cases.

Mail theft is a federal crime and it is on the rise (along with the meth epidemic) across the country. To protect yourself, use a high security locking mailbox like the Mail Boss to keep sensitive mail (bank statements, credit card offers, etc.) out of the hands of would-be identity thieves. Also, never send checks or bill payments from an unsecured mailbox. Bring them directly to the post office or use online bill pay - it's more secure.

But Wait! There's more!! In

But Wait! There's more!! In his interview he said he found god and is reading the bible now. How convenient.
