WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A fun night out turned scary for several people early this morning in the Port City. For the second time in three months, police are investigating a shooting outside the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club.
Wilmington Police arrested Lamont Deshawn LaFoucade, 39, after they say he shot a woman early Friday morning in a spot that's seen trouble before.
"Any time there is an incident like this, what we like to do is go back and have our statistical analysts look at all the numbers," WPD spokesman Det. Kevin Smith said.
With shootings only about three months apart, some people are wondering if the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club is another hot spot for violence.
"If it starts to add up and look like a case like the Rhino, where it is a constant drain on resources, a constant drain for the city, then that is when we usually start marshaling all of the forces," Smith said.
The Rhino Club downtown lost its liquor license two years ago after a man was stabbed to death outside. Police say the club became a nuisance to the community.
Smith says he does not believe the same is true for the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club.
"You could say it may be associated with the club, but it may not be," Smith said. "That is one of the things we have to look at."
Smith says lots of crimes happen in that area. They may not be connected to the club, but police will keep a close eye.
"This is just another pin in the map if you will," he said.
Smith says he understands people want to enjoy themselves, but he says to make sure someone who can recognize a dangerous situation is always present.
