Police say club not a nuisance despite two shootings outside in three months

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A fun night out turned scary for several people early this morning in the Port City. For the second time in three months, police are investigating a shooting outside the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club.

Wilmington Police arrested Lamont Deshawn LaFoucade, 39, after they say he shot a woman early Friday morning in a spot that's seen trouble before.

"Any time there is an incident like this, what we like to do is go back and have our statistical analysts look at all the numbers," WPD spokesman Det. Kevin Smith said.

With shootings only about three months apart, some people are wondering if the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club is another hot spot for violence.

"If it starts to add up and look like a case like the Rhino, where it is a constant drain on resources, a constant drain for the city, then that is when we usually start marshaling all of the forces," Smith said.

The Rhino Club downtown lost its liquor license two years ago after a man was stabbed to death outside. Police say the club became a nuisance to the community.

Smith says he does not believe the same is true for the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club.

"You could say it may be associated with the club, but it may not be," Smith said. "That is one of the things we have to look at."

Smith says lots of crimes happen in that area. They may not be connected to the club, but police will keep a close eye.

"This is just another pin in the map if you will," he said.

Smith says he understands people want to enjoy themselves, but he says to make sure someone who can recognize a dangerous situation is always present.

Sportsmans club

Keep it open! It's the opposite of a nuisance to the rest of the City. As long as they're there shooting each other they're not somewhere else shooting you and me. Let the hoodlums stay in the hood and away from the CBD.

Crime?

Not to worry,crime is down...everywhere!

"not a nuisance?"

The officers are right! This club is not a nuisance! Shootings happen at reputable establishments all the time! Especially in this fine part of town! The classy clientele that frequent this place should be outraged that anyone would suggest otherwise!

Instead of outlawing guns,

Instead of outlawing guns, lets outlaw monsters, that shoot women. He'll be out in less then 6 months.

Lets call it like it really

Lets call it like it really is. This club in not downtown so it is not going to get the same attention. If there is a girl fight at the Brickhouse officers are telling the owner he is going to get closed down. If this happened at the Brickhouse they would already be talking about ALE and nuisance abatement or an ABC summary suspension.

Are you jumping to conclusions?

Their website indicates the Sportsmen's Club closes nightly at 10:00 PM.

Are you certain the shooter and victim were at the club or just passing down the street on their way to 8th & Castle?

That the shooting took place near the building is no immediate indication the club or its members were involved.

These locations do not even

These locations do not even get started until after 10pm never minf close at 10pm

We're talking

about one location not "these locations".

My time reference came from their website.

And the Wilmington police have reported there was no connection between the shooting and the Sportsmen's Club.

Your point?

So wheres the NAACP now?

I think the NAACP should investigate this-

Won't show up

They won't show up because this won't make national headlines, like the murder of Josh Proutey. Now if the tables had been reversed and four white people had robbed and killed a 19 year old black student, the naacp would be all over this. There would be marches, protests and possibly riots. But since it wasn't national news worthy, it isn't worth their time.

show up

You people are seriously funny.Everytime something happens in the city you jump on the NAACP.You should first know what the organization is how it came about and why its still here. That might give you a clue.

sportsmans club

This club has had a long and enduring legacy of good men having a social club where gentlemen would meet. Recently, the club has come under the influence of less than desirable events that are staining the reputation of this fine organization.
It is up to the good members of this club to remove these stains brought on by some social misfits. I hope this occurs sooner rather than later.
Wilmington and the Sportsmen's club deserve better!

Not recently

The club hasn't recently come under the influence of less than desirable events, that has been going on there for years. This isn't the first shooting that has taken place there.

So hard to believe

A shooting at The Sportsman's Club? NO WAY!!! Such a great part of town filled with law abiding citizens.
