Port City Taxi driver robbed in Wilmington

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A cab driver was robbed at gunpoint in Wilmington early Monday morning. It happened just after 5 a.m.

Investigators say the driver was parked in the parking lot of Jason's Deli at 5301 Market Street, when a man walked up. The driver rolled his window down, and the suspect pulled out a hand gun and demanded money. The driver gave him money and said that the man left in a red car driven by another person he did not see.

The victim described the suspect as a black male, between 40 and 50 years of age, heavy set with a grey beard, wearing a brown "Carhart" style jacket.

If you have any information, call Wilmington Police.

Let's hope that the next

Let's hope that the next "fare" that attempts to rob a cabbie meets up with one that is packing. The tables will be turned and let's see what happens

I disagree

I drove a NYC cab for several years back in the 80's. Even though the element of danger was always there, I really don't think that carrying a gun would have helped me very much. The bad guy usually will have the gun pointed at the cabbie before the driver even realizes something bad is about to happen, not to mention the fact that the robber is usually (but not always) seated behind the driver.

There were times though when an illegal gun would have felt reassuring while standing in an empty subway station in Queens, NYC while going or coming from work at 4 or 5 in the morning.

Having said that, I'm still not a big proponent of the concept of thinking the solution to a lot of our nation's problems is to just keep adding more guns to the equation. That’s how it purportedly was back in the days of the “Wild West” and people we’re getting shot all the time (and not just the bad guys). If we’re all walking around with a gun, our society will be right back to using the law of the jungle to solve our problems instead of a judicial system. That’s just reverting back to being an animal instead of a human. Can’t see much progress in that.

Hey Anne

Unless the cabbie has the gun in his hand, loaded, and ready to use a would be robber who has his gun ready has the cabbie beat...sorry But keep trying....

Vog

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE , THE

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE , THE CABBIE JUST MIGHT HAVE THE GUN IN HAND, LOADED AND READY TO USE BESIDE HIM IN THE SEAT. AT LEAST HE WOULD HAVE A CHANCE. ALSO AUTOMATICALLY LOCK THE DOORS SO THEY CAN'T BE OPENED, AND THE ROBBER CAN'T GET OUT.

Reality check

Great idea, lock the doors so that the robber AND HIS LOADED GUN are locked in the cab with you, AND IN THE BACK SEAT! Gee, that'll never stress him out enough to start shooting if for no other reason than just to get out.

Dumb, really, really, really, really, really, really dumb!

If that's a great idea, I'd hate to see a bad one!

Seriously??

So, cab driver....we've heard multiple reports of robberies all over Market St. Yet, you sit ALONE in a parking lot at 5 in the morning and are DUMB ENOUGH to roll down your window as some guy just happens to walk up to your car??? Wow. Be glad you weren't driving for my company, you'd be out of a job QUICK.
As is probably apparent, I have NO sympathy for stupid, and what this driver did was stupid....smarten up or go find a line of work where you'll be safe. You sure don't need to be out in a taxi cab responsible for yourself.

So Tracie ... You're a cab driver?

Just curious 'cause that sounds like the kind of thing someone who actually doesn’t drive a cab would say.

Can’t think of one cab company that would fire a driver for getting robbed. The driver is usually the one who winds up paying for the loss. What difference would it make to the cab company? Hey, it’s a low paying dangerous job. I highly doubt there’s a bunch of people waiting in line to take that person’s job.

I once worked for a taxicab

I once worked for a taxicab company. I was not a driver, but still think that even though any robber is low down scum, anybody that would rob a cabbie is even lower. These drivers make their living doing long hours in a car, hauling drunks, psyshos and sometimes the dregs of society for not a lot of money, as they have to buy their own gas and pay their cab lease, or split their earnings with the cab company. It is totally despicable to take their money. Hope these thugs are caught and put under the jail.
