WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Two Zaxby's locations in Wilmington are among dozens of the restaurant chain's stores that may have been victimized by data thieves.

In a news release, Zaxby's Franchising, Inc. said some of its locations have identified suspicious files on their systems that may have resulted in unauthorized access to credit and debit card information or have been identified by credit card processing companies as common points of purchase for some fraudulent activity.

The list of affected stores includes the ones at 6811 Gordon Road and 4409 S. 17th Street Extension in Wilmington.

Zaxby's says it has notified appropriate law enforcement authorities of the potential criminal activity, which is believed to have originated from external sources, and will continue to cooperate with any investigation of this situation.

Although the company's investigation has not determined whether credit or debit card data left the processing systems of any of the locations, Zaxby's Franchising, Inc. says it is concerned that the existence of the suspicious files could indicate that an attacker or attackers may have accessed data, including credit and debit card information.

The company is working with all of its store locations to implement additional security measures to prevent further intrusions.

"Zaxby's Franchising, Inc. takes the security of guest information very seriously and is working closely with the affected store locations to provide notice to potentially affected guests," Zaxby's said in a statement. "Zaxby's Franchising, Inc. encourages all potentially affected guests to monitor their financial accounts for any unauthorized activity and to check their credit scores."

Zaxby's says customers can order a free copy of their credit reports by visiting the website www.annualcreditreport.com, by calling (877) 322-8228, or by completing the Annual Credit Report Form at www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/pdf-0093-annual-report-request-form.pdf. Any incident of fraud that guests may identify should promptly be reported to local law enforcement, the appropriate state Attorney General's office, and the Federal Trade Commission.

Thursday 1/10/13

I got a call on Friday morning from fraud services of my bank that noticed that a potential fraudulent transaction on thursday evening. I used my card at zaxbys that evening at Gordon road. The fraudulent item was at a walgreens in Fl. The card was cancelled and is being replaced with a new account number. Once I filed a report with my bank, the money was returned to my account.

I recommend that if u have recently visited zaxbys to check your checking account for fraud if u used a debit card. Call the number on the back of your card if it is a credit card and check your charges. If u suspect fraud call the bankcard services and file a dispute.

What Dates?

Can WWAY-TV do a little digging & let us know from which date(s) to which date(s) the breach was committed, and when it was discovered thereafter? Thanks!

Seriously?

It's not WWAY's responsibility to reconcile your credit card statement. Either you have suspicious charges from Zaxby's or you don't. Transaction dates should not matter.

if you read

the item, Zaxby's provides a toll free number for one to call.

That puts the shovel to dig in your hand.
