Names released of victims in fatal crash on US 421 in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Two people are dead after a crash between a log truck and a car in Pender County.

Highway Patrol says Debra Potter of Salemburg, and Juanita Potter of Clinton were both killed in the crash.

One man heard everything.

"It was unbelievable, you know? The day started out as normal. And then for something like that to happen, it is tragic," Jesse Fennell said.

Fennell is trying to forget what he saw today. He says he was in his work shop when he heard what sounded like two explosions.

"It sounded like two bombs were going off," Fennell said,.

A car heading North on US 421 crossed the center line colliding with a log truck traveling in the opposite direction.

"I ran up to the truck," Fennell said. "(The driver) was getting out of the truck, and he said he was OK. So we walked back down. That's when I saw the Chevy."

Investigators say two women were killed in the accident, while others were taken to the hospital.

"One lady was laying out in a ditch in front of the car," Fennell said. "And then there was another gentleman. He was pinned inside. He was OK."

I want to know the reason

What caused the driver to cross into the other lane?

I drive a truck for a living, and what I see from up here would amaze you. I am not exaggerating when I say that 9 out of 10 people that pass me have their phone in their hand, down at the center console so that nobody outside the car can see it. They don't hold it up where they can see it and the road at the same time, since they're afraid of being ticketed. They're watching videos, texting, browsing the web, dialing to make a call, you name it. Even half of all truckers that I see are doing something on their phones.

It's time that the penalties include mandatory jail time for distracted driving, along with a 4 figure fine. Maybe THAT will get someone's attention.

The reason she passed the

The reason she passed the center line was because she fell asleep after being up for hours. Maybe you needa think of other possibilities like that instead of being an instigator.

My brother and I drove my this wreck. I could tell it was bad not only by the amount of fire trucks around but by the looks on the faces of the firemen :(
