Wrightsville Beach, DOT discuss traffic delays caused by bridge work

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- As work continues on the Wrightsville Beach Drawbridge, locals hope to see an end to the construction soon.

This morning town officials talked with the NCDOT to come up with a solution to help traffic flow onto and off the island.

The bridge has been under full-time construction since October. Some days it backs up traffic for miles.

Residents and visitors are worried about the upcoming holidays and warmer months.

"It backs the traffic up. It takes you, I would say, anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to get back and forth across," beach visitor Angie Springs said.

It is a problem town leaders are trying to combat.

Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens says a lot of work still needs to be done.

"It's going to be labor intensive," Owens said. "We're going to have to have additional officers on those weekends. We're paying attention to the weather between now and April, and in April, DOT is saying it's supposed to go back to four lanes."

Although there is no final solution from Tuesday morning's meeting, town officials encourage everyone coming and going from the island to leave a little early.

"I choose to wait along with everyone else," resident Cheryl Anderson said. "It is a problem on both sides of the bridge during the times church is letting out, for example, on Sundays and when school is letting out at the end of a school day."

Work on the bridge is set to wrap up some time in April. Wrightsville Beach leaders will meet again with the DOT in February to make sure the project is still on track.

By the way...Easter 2013 is

By the way...Easter 2013 is March 31st...so look out folks!
We all know, as history tells us, that road construction around here never goes as planned. An April 2013 dead line is probably meant to pacify...but road construction projects are pretty much on the drawing board here every day of the working week for DOT...henceforth...never completes on projected schedule. Anyone remember the Military Cutoff delays...3rd Street down town...Seagate...Cape Fear Bridge closings all screwed up recently?
They should have started building another bridge last October next to the Wrightsville Beach existing bridge...and today's delay's would have been accepted better...I think. A goal being reached for islanders, in other words. Take some of that Parking Meter cash and invest W.B.!
Out going bridge sign reads..."Thank You For Visiting Tourist"...Primary (oncoming) bridge sign reads..."Welcome To Wrightsville Beach Locals...Now Leave!".
Sorry...no sympathy here :-(
