Registered sex offender charged with 20-year-old crimes against child

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A registered sex offender is back in jail charged with sex crimes against a child two decades ago.

The Pender County Sheriff's Office arrested Barry Gene Gurganious, 42, of Currie Tuesday for two counts of first degree statutory sexual offense and two counts of indecent liberties with a child. Det. John Leatherwood says the crimes happened with a girl between April 22, 1992 and April 21, 1993. Leatherwood would not say why it took so long for the charges to come to light.

Leatherwood says Gurganious was also arrested in November 1996 for statutory rape, statutory sexual offense and taking indecent liberties with a minor. He pleaded guilty to indecent liberties with a child in March 2000, which led to him having to register as a sex offender. Det. Leatherwood says this week's arrest is not connected to the 1996 incident.

Gurganious is in the Pender County Jail under $800,000 bond.

He needs to be buried under the jail.
