Fire destroys Calabash strip mall

READ MORE:

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) -- An early-morning fire in Calabash destroyed a strip mall on Carter Drive.

Firefighters got the call at 12:20 a.m. They arrived on scene a few minutes later, but flames were already shooting through the roof of 947 Bistro & Pub (formerly known as Nesbitt's Bar and Grill), and spread quickly to other adjoining businesses, which include Head Hunter Barber Shop, Calabash Florist and Reflections Stained Glass.

Firefighters from Sunset Sunset Beach and Grissettown helped crews from Calabash, but the small block of businesses was a total loss, firefighters said. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

i was sad to hear of the fire at the reflections stained glass shop. i had a piece repaired and my sister had a lamp made there. i hope they are able to rebuild. i really enjoyed the people there they are friendly and very helpful.

I just loved going to

I just loved going to Reflections - I have a number of their pieces, including a beautiful parrot that I treasure. I do hope they will be able to reopen. Such wonderful people, such a tragedy. Had been wanting to get back there again to see what pieces I could fall in love with. My best wishes to Patty and hope that all works out for her.better

Reflections Stained Glass

I am completely stunned and heartbroken to just learn of the fire and destruction of Reflections! The owners are wonderful and I've met some really wonderful people while going to classes. I always looked forward to my Saturdays there. My heart goes out to everyone but especially Patti and her husband.

This is the third major fire

This is the third major fire in a fairly short period of time. It won't be long before everybody in Calabash will have a new building.

Don't be an a**

If you are going to make such bold statements then atleast be a man and sign your real name "Guest1946". I am an owner of one of the three that has recently burned and it is devastating. It's really none of your business but I owed way more than the "insurance money" that I was paid. How could anyone benefit from those circumstances? Have some compassion for these people that have lost their businesses and the way they feed their families. If foul play is suspected - the investigators will find that and I'm sure they will be prosecuted by a REAL judge and jury. A little bit of class goes a long way A**HOLE!!

Hold on, fellow.......I

Hold on, fellow.......I NEVER mentioned anything about foul play. YOU came up with that. Could it be that you know something the rest of us do not? Always heard the hurt dog yells the loudest. As for any prosecution in Brunswick County, not in this "good 'ol boy" county. As for class, you lack plenty of that, as only a classless troll would call folks names like you did for no reason.

Misleading

Not for nothing Guest1946, but your original post does in fact lead the reader to think YOU would suspect "foul play". The simple fact that you would make that statement after such loss to ALL these families shows the type of person you are. Furthermore, if you don't like what you call the "good 'ol boy" county, please keep in mind that the same road you came in on can take you right back out.
My thoughts and prayers are with the business owners as they try to make sense of it all. Thankfully nobody was hurt and you can rebuild your businesses that you love so much.

I don't see foul play, but......

3 major fires in a short period of time makes me think that perhaps fire fighting capabilities may be lacking in the area?
I'm not disparaging the volunteers either perhaps they need a regional fire department? More equipment?
The major losses exhibited by these 3 fires has got to be noticed by the insurance company's who underwrite in this area.
Are fire insurance rates for businesses about to get very expensive?

Vog

equipment HA !

The building that burned was aprox, 20 feet from the calabash fire department yet it burned to the ground. These people are in fact in the process of building a huge new fire station with all the brunswick county fees collected. they purchased a calabash historical property tore it down for a larger fire station. Just seems like a fluke that the new fire station would just be coming out of the ground when this fire happened.not pointing any fingers ,just saying. It will however be another fluke if the fire department winds up with that property also.
sure does look bad for that building to burn to the ground with all the lies we have been told about needing a new building ,new trucks ect.Maybe if the paid firemen would stop driving the big firetrucks to the store and bank for personal use things will get better, right now they all look like a bunch of asses.

As a retired code official,

As a retired code official, I did not take Guest1946's comment as negative. Many older structures are vulnerable to fire from many sources. It could be faulty electrical connection or other such unfortunate circumstance. Recently there have been house fires in the area due to human error.

All of these events are unfortunate and I also share your thoughts for the difficulties facing the business owners.

Telling someone to take the road out is counter-productive and goes against one of the great freedoms we have as Americans. Are you proposing closing State, County, and Town borders?

I have been a Brunswick

I have been a Brunswick County resident for over half my life. That equates to over 35 years. I have found that any time someone has an idea, opinion, or mentions anything that goes against the local mindset, the standard comeback is basically to leave the area. 3 major fires in a place as small as Calabash is extremely unusual. Has Shallotte had this problem? How about Southport, Leland? Certainly the firefighters only respond after the fact, so unless there is a renegade volunteer setting the fires, surely no one can blame them. But somehow I still feel that when somebody gets very defensive, perhaps a red flag should go up.

I understand some

I understand some speculation- Calabash IS a small town and three major fires in such a short amount of time could cause one to raise an eyebrow. I get that. Maybe it hasn't happened in Shallotte, Leland or Southport- and i hope it never does - but are you suggesting that we are a town full of idiots? How does that even make sense? Perhaps I am defensive- that is probably due to the amount of negative comments and "jokes" I hear on a daily basis. I know when working with the public that this is just " par for the course" but it does get frustrating. There's only so many " I guess competition got really hot in town...hardy har har"'s one can take during a devastating time. I'm just asking for a little bit of compassion and less judgement for these people that have already lost so much. Even IF this strip mall was intentionally burned down by a single business owner- that still leaves at least three others who are left with just ashes. As for the fire department- Calabash Fire department and the surrounding fire departments responded quickly and went above and beyond to salvage the building and neighboring buildings in my case and I applaud them for doing a great job.

Reflections Stained Glass

I have so many wonderful memories and so much time spent at Reflections Stained Glass. Am so saddened by this news as this has been a favorite place for so many stained glass enthusiasts throughout the state for many years.

Stained glass

I've been there. You are right. There is nothing else quite like it. I hope they rebuild!

Reflections Stained Glass

Completely stunned and heartbroken to just hear of the fire that destroyed Reflections. The owners are such wonderful people! I am speechless. :-( My heart goes out to all owners who lost their businesses.
