Marine's final trip home includes Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The final trip home for a North Carolina Marine killed during training in Nevada earlier this month passed through Wilmington Thursday evening.

The body of LCpl. Mason Vanderwork arrived at Wilmington International Airport around 7 o'clock. From there he will head to Jacksonville for a memorial at Onslow Beach aboard Camp Lejeune Saturday at noon then onto his native Hickory for his funeral Monday.

Vanderwork, 21, was one of seven members of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune killed March 18, when a mortar shell exploded in its firing tube during an exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. Eight men were injured.
