SMITHFIELD, NC (AP) -- The body of a missing North Carolina woman has been found inside her wrecked car, days after it was ordered towed to an impound lot by the state Highway Patrol.

Carolyn Ann Watkins was reported missing Monday, three days after her crashed 2000 Pontiac was discovered in a ditch off Swift Creek Road near Smithfield. An accident report filed Friday by Trooper Marlon Williams mistakenly indicated that no driver was at the scene.

The patrol had a local towing company move the car to its lot for storage, where it remained with the 62-year-old Clayton woman inside until her body was found inside late Monday. It is not yet clear when Watkins died.

Public Safety Commissioner Frank Perry has promised a thorough investigation. Williams has been placed on paid leave.

Trooper Williams placed on "leave"?

On leave? While you're at it, send him to the eyedoctor for an exam...that's AFTER you send him back to accident investigation 101 school. Forget all of that, kick him back to being a Fuquay-Varina city foot cop stationed at the local Dairy Queen. This guy makes Barney Fife look like a Senior FBI agent!

How could a Highway Patrol occifer possibly miss a body in the vehicle and have it towed? They aren't sure when she died? Geeeeez.....poor lady!

"MISTAKENLY" missed the

"MISTAKENLY" missed the body, you have to be kidding me. The first thing a trained officer does is completely check the vehicle. I bet nothing will happen to the officer, maybe a few days off. That's the the NCSHP.

I AGREE WITH MISTAKENLY, ITS

I AGREE WITH MISTAKENLY, ITS HIS JOB TO CHECK OUT THE INSIDE OF THE CAR.SOMETHING DONT ADD UP, WHY DIDNT HE LOOK.
