ONLY ON 3: Longtime secretary talks about leaving New Hanover Co. Sheriff's Office

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- After nearly 30 years of service, today the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office honored one of its own.

You might not recognize her name or her face, but coworkers say Sheriann Davis is the heart and soul of the Sheriff's Office.

"There will be a void in the Sheriff's Office for the rest of eternity, because she is an irreplaceable person," Sheriff Ed McMahon said.

Davis has served as the sheriff's assistant since 1986, working under four different sheriffs. All of them came back for a surprise retirement party Wednesday.

"She is such an integral part of the success of the sheriff's office that we wanted the community to get a glimpse of her," McMahon said.

A glimpse that came with a little bit of resistance, because Davis does not like being the center of attention.

"I wanted to leave as quietly as I came, but this is what they wanted to do, and sometimes you just go with the flow, and that's what I have done for 27 years and have enjoyed every minute of it," Davis said.

As a lifelong Wilmingtonian, she has seen a lot of changes within the community and is thankful to have been a part of history.

"They keep saying, 'We don't know what we are going to do.' You are going to do the same thing you have always done," Davis said. "You're going to carry on and make the sheriff's office better than it is today."

And as she prepares to close this chapter of her life, Sheriff McMahon had one final message for the woman he calls one of his best friends.

"I hope that Sheriann can have a nice, peaceful retirement and be able to travel and relax and not have the pressures of the entire sheriff's department behind her," he said.

It's pressure Davis is looking forward to leaving behind.

Davis is not done just yet, though. Her last day will be at the end of the month, but the sheriff's office knew if they wanted to surprise her, they had to do it when she least expected it.

Davis said she'll be available to the sheriff's office in retirement. Just don't call until after noon.

Good Woman

Mrs. Davis was my contact at the Sheriff's Office when I was employed at the New Hanover Correctional Center for matters involving the Sheriff. She was very polite, conscientous and always delivered on her promises. I can understand how she was the back bone of the Sheriff's Dept. She is a remarkable woman!
