Roses attract growers from the Cape Fear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Beautiful azaleas are known to grow wild and plentiful in Southeastern North Carolina.
But this weekend, members of the Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society showed off a different bloom.

The Annual Rose Tour featured eleven gardens full of various roses. Gardeners say the challenge of growing roses in this area is what makes it so fun. They say these gardens are proof it can be done.

"Roses definitely take a little more attention than azaleas do," said Cape Fear Rose Society Member Mike Caulder.
"You can plant azaleas and pretty much leave them and they will bloom. Rose are…you have to feed them a little more. You have to spray for black spot. You have to spray for insects. They definitely take a little more attention."

The Saturday event was free to the public. Caulder says growing anything starts with the soil. His rose gardens are over ten years old and he’s never had more fun.
