KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Today hundreds gathered in Kure Beach for a birthday celebration. Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce asked people around the area to join them blow out the candles for their 75th anniversary celebration.
Today family and friends came to enjoy the music and food at the Fort Fisher Recreation Area in Kure Beach. Hundreds brought chairs, blankets, coolers, and picnics to sit by the water and enjoy the celebration. One man says his favorite part was the motown music being performed.
"They have the band playing and they're selling some food and telling us about Pleasure Island and how it came to be," a resident Tim Vanwormer says.
He says they enjoy coming to these events. Some danced and other listened to the free concert. Chamber of Commerce President Gail McCloskey says it was a good turnout.
"We got a really good crowd in spite of the way the weather looked. There's a lot of people out here and the music is awesome," McCloskey says.
People involved in the chamber over the years that helped it get where it is today were recognized. Carolina Beach Mayor Bob Lewis says Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is made up of around 400 businesses across Pleasure Island and into Wilmington.
"I don't know about every year but when you're 75 years in history I think you need to celebrate. It's great. I'd like to see them do it more often," Mayor Bob Lewis says.
Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce President Gail McCloskey says the next event will be a concert and fireworks on Memorial Day.
