Camp Lejeune cancels 4th of July fireworks

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WWAY) -- Base leaders at Camp Lejeune have decided to cancel this year's 4th of July event for the public to minimize the fiscal impact on vital programs affected by sequestration.

"Our continued support to the operating forces, our Wounded Warriors and our families always comes first," base commander Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry said in a statement. "I didn't make this decision lightly, as I understand how important this event is to our service members and the local community, but canceling it will allow us to use all available resources to ensure we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing."

Marine Corps Community Services, with the support of local sponsors, plans to offer a number of free activities that day to all active duty personnel, retirees and their family members, including golf, bowling, skeet shooting, archery, and free movies at the base theater. In addition, many marina and beach recreational equipment rental fees will be waived that day.

Cancellation of Fireworks

I think it is a sad state of affairs in this country when fireworks displays at major military bases, such as Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg
are cancelled because of lack of funding. It is only the celebration of our very independence of our country, probably one of the most important yearly patriotic events. But at the same time our President has no remorse for spending $60-$100 million dollars for a family vacation to Africa. Can somebody please shed some rational light on the improprieties of this? Sounds like the White House needs to get their priorities aimed in the right direction.

As sad as this is direct your anger towards the Sec of Defense who was given leeway on how to handle the bipartisan supported sequestration cuts.
They build Abrams tanks that have no crews
They build Littoral ships that have no business being built
They build many things the DoD doesn't want.

Congress wants these programs continued because they employ constituents back home.........
They spend stupidly.......
