HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The body of a swimmer missing since Tuesday in Lockwood Folly Inlet has been found in Brunswick County.
Holden Beach Police Chief Wally Layne says the body of Kwesi Sample was found around 7 a.m. about a half mile from where he was last seen. The 21-year-old from Columbus, OH, was visiting the area as part of a church conference.
Police say Sample and some friends were trying to swim from Holden Beach to Oak Island Tuesday afternoon, when Sample began struggling and went underwater. Earlier this week Chief Layne said the strong current in inlet and water temperature in the low 60s may have been factors in Sample's drowning.
Crews began searching for Sample Tuesday after getting a 911 call just after 5 p.m. Several agencies took part in the search on land and water and in the air over the next few days. They used divers and side scan sonar to try and find Sample.
In a news release, Layne said Sample's body has been released to the Brunswick County Medical Examiner's Office pending release to his family.
